agebam discipulus

Hello.
In our textbook (it's for beginners), there is the following sentence for translation:

Multos annos ibi agebam discipulus.

Since I don't know Latin well, I don't understand how agebam and discipulus are related. I take it to mean that agebam is imperfectum indicativi activi (1st person - "I guided (or whatever else ago can mean here)"), and discipulus is in the nominative case. What does it mean?
Thank you.
